The
BroadwayWorld Regional Awards is a contest sponsored by BroadwayHD,
aiming to recognize the best venues, productions, touring shows, and
acting in the area. This year the BroadwayWorld Regional Awards featured
voting in over 100 cities across America, Canada, Central and South
America, Europe, and Asia.
Categories were set by local editors and reader-submitted nominees were voted on by local theater-goers. Regional
productions, touring shows, and more were all included in the awards,
honoring productions which opened between October 1, 2017 through
September 30, 2018.
Voting took place online at www.BroadwayWorld.com during the month of December 2018. Anyone with a valid email address was eligible to vote for their favorite nominees.

Young Peoples Pavilion: Using Classical Music to Stimulate Children's Writing.

In 1979 I remember sitting in the front of the tent at summer camp, with classic rock music from the era blaring from the radio. Many of those songs endure today. It made me ponder the universal reach of classics, from rock n’ roll to Mozart. I have been pondering how to use such creative motivations from my youth to help stimulate creative writing in my classroom.
In recent discussions with professional development communities, we have been exploring the idea that when children are engaged with films, television shows, movies and video games, they are subliminally listening to a soundtrack.
The students make associations are being made to the atmosphere of a scene. With their sudden changes in tempo and atmosphere, film soundtracks are particularly useful. It is important for teachers to review, reflect on and analyze various experiences to see how they can connect them to the classroom.
With symphonies lingering in my head from a recent concert, I decided to use music to inspire some writing. As with a soundtrack, a symphony is filled with sudden changes in volume, tempo, beat, rhythm and mood. I will choose from Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mahler, and Mozart.
Such elaborate instrumental compositions are filled with the wonder, grand proportions and varied elements. This week, I will play a symphony in my classroom. To begin with, I will let the children infer what is happening. I will ask the children to write one word that summarizes the overall work of music. We will discuss what they hear and feel, and I will list sample words on the board.
We will listen to the symphony again. Then we will share: did the piece change? How did it change? The words drafted will be used to stimulate further ideas and write stories. I will model some whole sentences for the class to use. The children will have to write their stories based on the music.
I will use the analogy of an old radio. Before the digital age, we found our favorite radio station by carefully turning the radio dial until it lined up with the station’s frequency. As we approached the number, we could only hear static. But when we finally achieved the proper alignment, the music could be heard. I will tell the students that talking, thinking and reading about works of art such as music is a way to align yourself with your own best writing frequency.
After this assignment is done, I will write another diary, reflecting on how it went. Additional assignments that can be drawn from this learning experience can include writing reviews of concerts, recordings, art, and local events.

Sean Rogers and Chicken Dinner Road Ignite the Nampa Civic Center!
TONIGHT! Sean Rogers brings a lively show to the Nampa Civic Center. Rogers joins together with local Idaho progressive bluegrass band Chicken Dinner Road to provide an evening of ragtime, rock-a-billy and fun. With visual art and great music, this is a must see show!Sean has won praise and acclaim nationally and internationally for his artistic mastery at the keyboard. Sean is a concert artist who is just as comfortable in classical as he is with jazz. At the age of eight, Sean accepted his first organist-post for a church and has continued playing ever since. He started playing the organ in restaurants at age 12 and accepted a job of playing cocktail piano in a lounge when he was 16 years old.
At age 16, Sean accepted the job of musical director for the “Illustrious Onion-Skin Players” where he improvised background music throughout their dramatic productions and performed ragtime and honky-tonk music for their touring productions.
Sean’s experience in productions has led him to direct over 80 Opera and Musical Theatre productions. Sean is currently General Music Director/ Resident Conductor of The Utah and Idaho Performing Arts Company in Draper, Utah.

Among the best seasons of American Idol, season five contained a shocking elimination and an intense battle between two substantial contestants to the end for the win. 200 million television viewers watched that night as Taylor Hicks won ... Less than three weeks after his Idol triumph in 2006, Taylor’s debut single, “Do I Make You Proud,” entered Billboard’s Hot 100, Pop 100 and Single Sales Charts at the No. 1 spot. People magazine then named him “Hottest Bachelor of the Year.” Hicks’ star continued to rise after he stepped off the IDOL stage.
In 2007, Hicks penned a brisk-selling autobiography “Heart Full of Soul” (Random House). Hicks is the first male IDOL winner to be featured on a Grammy Award-winning album, Jimmy Fallon’s “Blow Your Pants Off,” which took home the 2013 Grammy for Best Comedy Album. On Broadway,
Hicks starred in the hit musical, GREASE as Teen Angel, and when asked to join the national tour, happily agreed. The 18-month tour connected him with fans across North America. In June 2012, Taylor Hicks began his residency at Bally's Las Vegas.
As a testament to his musical talent and showmanship, Hicks will continue to bring the roadhouse to the Las Vegas Strip with a year-long extension through 2013 at a larger venue, Paris Las Vegas, making him the first Idol winner in history to secure a long term residency in Las Vegas. Hicks has since rapidly evolved into one of the most popular acts in the city.
On August 30, 2012 Hicks performed at the closing night of the 2012 Republican National Convention, playing to a crowd of 18,500 delegates in Tampa, Florida, and a national TV audience of over 30 million viewers.
Hicks, who hails from Birmingham, Ala., had music on his mind from childhood. As a young adult, he became a fixture around the Southeast, playing concerts and club dates with visiting stars like James Brown, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Robert Randolph, Keb’ Mo’ and Widespread Panic, among others. Hicks also released the independent albums “In Your Time” and “Under the Radar.”
Later, these albums were compiled and released by Vanguard Records as “Early Works.” Hicks has also performed with artists like Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Gladys Knight, Earth Wind and Fire and The Allman Brothers, appearing in concerts worldwide. In addition to headlining at Paris Las Vegas and other Caesars Entertainment properties all over the United States, he is currently in studio working on his first country album.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS
2014: Parsons Dance launched its educational outreach program at PS 75 in New York City. Through this program Parsons Dance company members engaged with elementary school students to bring creativity, artistic expression, and bodily awareness to the classroom through dance.
2014: On May 10th, Parsons Dance gave a world premiere in collaboration with Allen Toussaint and the Allen Toussaint Orchestra in New Orleans. The NOLA Defender described the premiere as a “world where reality and fantasy are no longer at odds” but rather “in a beautiful dance together.” This collaboration also saw the premiere of “Whirlaway.”
2014: Former company dancer, Natalie Lomonte, was chosen as the recipient of the new GenerationNOW fellowship program, a project which gives one emerging American choreographer the opportunity to create a new work for the company to be performed throughout its season.
2014: On January 14th, Parsons Dance kicked off its 30th Anniversary Season at its annual Gala.

Come and meet those dancing feet! Broadway is back in Boise.
Nov 6 and 7: This sparkling new production is directed by co-author Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the team who staged the 2001 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival. 42ND STREET delivers everything you want in a Broadway musical – singing, dancing, hopes, dreams, laughs and some of the greatest songs ever written, including “We’re In The Money,” ” Lullaby of Broadway” and, of course, “42nd Street,” at the Morrison Center.
42nd Street is an American musical with a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, lyrics by Al Dubin, and music by Harry Warren. The 1980 Broadway production, produced by David Merrick, directed by an ailing Gower Champion and orchestrated by Philip J. Lang, won the Tony Award for Best Musical and became a long-running hit.

The show was produced in London in 1984 (winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical) and its 2001 Broadway revival won the Tony for Best Revival. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 Hollywood film adaptation, the show focuses on the efforts of famed dictatorial Great White Way director Julian Marsh to mount a successful stage production of a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression.
